Travel Safety Tips: Must-Have Security Accessories

Most travel security problems are boring and preventable: a wallet lifted in a crowded metro, a card skimmed through a bag, a hotel door with one too many keys in circulation. You don't need paranoia — you need four pieces of gear and a few habits.

1. In crowds: stop pickpockets and skimmers

Crowded transit and tourist hotspots are where phones and wallets disappear. Two defences:

  • An anti-theft backpack with lockable zips and cut-resistant construction — wear it front-facing in packed metros
  • An RFID-blocking wallet — handheld readers can skim contactless cards through fabric; an RFID layer makes that impossible

2. In your hotel: control the door

Budget hotels, hostels, guesthouses and rentals all share one weakness — you never know who else has a key. A portable door lock adds a physical barrier that works from the inside on almost any door, installs in seconds and weighs almost nothing. For solo travellers it's the single highest-value item on this list.

3. In the air: know where your bag is

Airlines mishandled millions of bags last year. A Bluetooth luggage tracker dropped inside your checked bag shows its live location through global finder networks — so if your bag goes to the wrong city, you know before the airline does, and you have proof.

4. On public WiFi: encrypt everything

Airport and hotel WiFi is convenient and unencrypted. If you log into banking or work accounts while travelling, a pocket travel router with built-in VPN puts every device behind your own encrypted network — one login, everything protected.

The habits that cost nothing

  • Split cards and cash across two locations
  • Photograph your passport and store it in the cloud
  • Use the hotel safe for the passport, carry a copy
  • Never let your daypack ride on your back in a packed train
