How to Pack Light for International Flights

Checked-bag fees keep rising, transfers keep getting tighter, and the happiest people at any airport are the ones rolling past the carousel. Packing light is a method, not a talent — here it is.

The 7-day rule

Whether your trip is 5 days or 25, pack for 7 and plan a laundry stop. Seven days of clothes fits any carry-on; twenty-five days fits nothing.

Step 1: compress everything

Compression packing cubes are the core tool — roll clothes into the cube, zip the compression layer, and reclaim up to 60% of your bag. Use one cube per category (tops, bottoms, small items) so you unpack by lifting out three cubes, not by excavating.

Step 2: weigh before you leave home

Cabin baggage allowances on international carriers range from 7 kg to 12 kg, and gate agents do check. A digital luggage scale weighs your bag in seconds at home — the difference between strolling to the gate and repacking on the airport floor.

Step 3: carry things that disappear when unused

Step 4: consolidate the electronics

One universal adapter with USB-C fast charging replaces every country plug and most charging bricks. If you check a bag anyway, drop a Bluetooth luggage tracker inside — light bags still go missing.

Step 5: wear the heavy stuff

Heaviest shoes and jacket travel on your body, not in your bag. Pockets are free baggage allowance.
